Effective June 1, stories published by The Inquirer immediately on philly.com from Monday through Friday will be edited by the copy desk.

1. FOR STORIES WHERE A BREAKING VERSION IS GOING ONLINE AND A FULLER VERSION WILL APPEAR IN THE PAPER
A. The slug should begin with the letters ON followed by a dash. For example, a story that will appear in the paper as JSHOT20 would be moved in its online form as ON-JSHOT20.
B. The slug will be posted online by the assigning editor exactly as is done now, with a headline written by the assigning editor, so that the news is posted quickly.
C. Then, however, the assigning editor will move the slug to the Copy Desk using the following system:
1. Any story before 2 p.m. should move to FEATURES/COPY/IN.
2. Any story after 2 p.m. except Sports should move to its typical desk. Sports should move to Features until 4.
3. After 4 p.m. Sports stories should move to their typical desk.
D. The copy editor will edit the story in the same manner as a print story, asking whatever questions are necessary. The copy editor will edit and may rewrite the headline. The copy will move to a slot. When done, the slot will re-post the story to philly.com using ctrl-alt-A to send to the web and the edited version will then appear. The slot then returns the story to ASSIGN status.
E. If the story subs for news events, the same process is followed. Assigning editor calls back story; reposts; resends to copy desk, which again reposts.
F. Eventually, the print version story will move through the copy desk separately. It will post with the dump overnight.

2. FOR STORIES WHERE WE WANT TO GET AN ORIGINAL FEATURES STORY ONLINE IN ADVANCE
A. The print slug should be used. No need to use ON-.
B. The slug will be posted by the assigning editor and moved to the Features copy desk.
C. The Features slots will receive the daily note about what stories are being posted early. In addition, the assigning editor must indicate in notes mode that the story is already online. This two-step process will prevent things from falling through the cracks.
D. The copy editor will edit the story as a print story and it will be slotted as such. However, when it is slotted, the slot will re-post it online immediately.
